Opinions/Advice on my 99D S2 Model?
I am relatively new to 3d design, in that i have no training or really any idea what i'm doing.
But i thought, where better to ask for advice on both modelling and General Design of this gun than this forum.
I Started making this model for personal uses (Fallout mod) but i'm not very good at editing and i thought i would ask what y'all think :)

Thanks in advance for any feedback i receive

That looks surprisingly good . How long have you been doing 3d designs (because i have LITERALLY no idea of how to do that)

Re: Opinions/Advice on my 99D S2 Model?
Thanks! :) I've been modelling for maybe a year now, and by a year i mean i haven't done any in about 10 months :)
If you wanna try it just download Blender, it's a freeware modelling application with a lot of power and since it's free there's no pressure to get your moneys worth from it.
If you were to start making them i advise watching youtube tutorials but in a brief summary of what you do- You just add objects to the workspace, extrude them accordingly and after making the basic model refine the edges to look smoother and boolean the details into the model. Good Luck :)

Thx for the reply but what would be the most "noob-friendly" engine (definitely not now but for maybe in a year) still going to try out blender looks very promising

Re: Opinions/Advice on my 99D S2 Model?
No problem. The most "noob-friendly" i can think of is blender. There are other applications for CAD but blender is probably the easiest starting application. It's really not too difficult and luckily the skills learnt from it can be easily transferred to more professional applications like 3dsMax. :)

Re: Opinions/Advice on my 99D S2 Model?
Really never knew that could happen so are you saying (for example) i made an 30 second animation on blender i could move it to cryengine/unreal engine?

I use Blender, I assume so.theXboxguy117 wrote:Really never knew that could happen so are you saying (for example) i made an 30 second animation on blender i could move it to cryengine/unreal engine?
Although I would try to export it into your game engine AND THEN make it work. Just to help have all your assets in one program and not have to import last minute textures and materials.
Then again i don't have any real experience and all I have done is fiddle in UDK and make a few blobs in Blender supposed to be a person...
Just Google tutorials, that solves everything.... :3
As to any suggestions to the gun model specifically (it's so much better than anything than I've ever accomplished) I'd say your next step is to add a material to it. You can make one fairly easily I think, maybe use gimp for the skin then use other software for spectral and diffuse data
Also if this is a mod and you don't know any code try working with simply reskinning another weapon, or copy it's data, then put the skin in that...

Wow, that looks really good! I'm not a modeler myself, but I wouldn't think it would be too hard to color it, since the sniper has mostly shades of grey and black, and then green for the scope.

Your round parts definitely need more work. No offence but they look like rectangle strips stuck together. If you really want quality stuff than you should fix that.

Re: Opinions/Advice on my 99D S2 Model?
-Senjin- I'm terrible at texturing unfortunately, and in the process i usually end up making it varying shades of one colour then mess up on the scratches :(That's why i spend so much time on small details that would normally be made with textures. I used to port the .3ds over to nifskope and just replace all the codes etc. but i realised it was a bit sloppy and doesn't really make it easy to create custom reload animations so now i just code the majority myself :)
-SilentGamer64- Thanks :) The problem is while i am slightly proficient in modelling, i'm well below average at texturing and if i do things myself it will make the whole thing look worse, but generally that would be my next step, if merely for testing purposes :)
-Jaing- The problem is that i'm modelling this from about 3 reference images all from in-game and also partly from my own experience with rifles. And from the halo 3 screenshots it is predominantly rectangular. While i would enjoy freestyling while making the model, i decided at an early stage i was going to keep it as true to the game as much as possible
Thank you to everyone for your valuable feedback and responses :D

@Loo10ant
Well my best idea would be to start with colouring it one color, then painting over that methodically adding detail. Start with the bigger ones and progressively work in a smaller scale. It's the same concept as making a mesh model like your gun :3
