New Video Card for the Rig
Ok so it may all be hype, but I was in the market for a new card anyway, the current card (EVGA GTX 950 sc ) was Ok and was very quite and it managed most demands I made, but I had noticed some issues in 4k.
So today ordered the Nvidia GTX 1080 founders edition card. and will admit I am pretty stoked at the thought of cranking everything up to max / ultra and seeing the effects in 4K on a 40" screen.
I believe AMD has not a competitor available as yet, however I have bought Nvidia 90% of all GPU's I owned.
If anyone is interested, I will be happy to confirm or deny any issues re this card.
No delivery date as yet, but will advise when known.

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
I would have waited until the entire AMD line was released to be honest. But then I guess if you're buying a $600 stock gpu you've got enough disposable income.
I really want to make a new build and give my PC to my brother ^_^ Maybe when Vega comes out!

1080 Founders edition isn't exactly "Stock" if you've seen its specs. Js

I meant to say Reference, I think. At least with some AMD/ATI GPUs it's my understanding that Reference designs have cooling and sometimes overclocking issues?

To attempt to answer here please bear with me while i quote the Nvidia data.
(Again it may be hype but the numbers quoted for the card re temperature and power consumption seem promising) , AFAIK this is achieved re temp by a vapour cooling system and a single fan. ( Non Nvidia manufactured cards are belived to have dual fan setups? ) and the pascal architecture with the smaller manufacturing process is the reason for the comparativly lower power requirements. and as R93 stated I did opt for the founders edition due to the quoted quality and reliability / speeds of the card and not the basic gtx 1080.
This is the first time i have bought a GPU on release and I guess I wanted to see the benchmarks for my set-up, so yes I did pay a premium an eye watering £619 ( $905.10 dollars or for the Aussies 957.62 AUD), but as a lot of other manufactures are releasing cards described as Founder edition but are known as reference cards, I decided that buying directly from Nvidia was the best guarantee, the nvidia 3 yr warranty was also a deciding factor here.
I found this on a web site (Ars Technica ) Ouch !! { maybe i did get burnt, or is this a AMD site :( }
- quote:
Just what the heck is a Founders Edition?
Nvidia confused many with the introduction of the Founders Edition cards at the 1080's Austin outing, but in reality Founders Edition is simply a new name for reference cards that have been slapped with a higher price tag. Nvidia says the higher price goes towards an upgraded five-phase power supply and the (admittedly gorgeous) vapour chamber shroud that looks likes it's been crafted out of shards of aluminium and glass.
The reference redesign was long overdue given the previous design debuted with the Titan back in 2013. But despite Nvidia's protests, the Founders Edition price rise is what it is: an early adopter tax. If you want a 1080 on launch day (or very likely the upcoming 1070 too), Nvidia is milking its brand power and charging a cool £619/$699 for privilege. Cheaper cards from partners like Asus and EVGA will arrive with custom coolers and designs at a later date.
Still awaiting tracking info, so I guess sometime next week for delivery?

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Well as an AMD fanboy user, I hope it turns out awesomely ^_^ What do you plan on throwing at it for some benchmarks?

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Thanks for the positive aspect, I will be crushed if its a pig in a poke. re the benchmarking tests, I'm open to suggestions but will try Passmark and of course the 4K Firestorm 3D mark 11 benchmarking from Futuremark. I may look for some other stressful tests depending on the inital results.deadofmind wrote:Well as an AMDfanboyuser, I hope it turns out awesomely ^_^ What do you plan on throwing at it for some benchmarks?
The Gpu has been the weakest point in my system, and I regret cutting back when I spec'd and built ( assembled ) the rig.
Again still awaiting the delivery date / tracking info, but still full of anticipation !

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Have downloaded Unigine Heaven, and will try it out on the 950, as I'm still waiting delivery ( I loathe the bank holiday disrupting / delaying things ) .

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Well the new card has arrived and been installed, here is a 3D mark link, the Unigine results both Heaven and Valley are not here due to the engine being only DX11 and for some reason reporting the card memory as 4gb ?
these are the out of the box results with no tweaking attampted
Firestrike 3D mark result

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Ok so I guess I wanted a little more so I watercooled the 1080 using the EVGA hybrid kit. A word of caution though to anyone who may want to use a EVGA kit.
1. The instructions are very brief and miss out some critical information.
2. The quality of the parts are less than optimum, some fastners were very stiff to insert correctly,
Please remember that I am using a Nvidia Founders card with the EVGA 1080 hybrid kit, as the kit is compatable with all founders edition cards both EVGA and others.
The convertion took the better part of 3 hrs, but the cooler quieter card is well worth it to me. GPU stressed was 45 dec C ( 88 deg C when air cooled ) and a lot quieter the fluctuating fan had been cured by this.

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
Just thought I haven't posted an image of the rig, so here's a pic to put that right.

There is hybrid cooling for both the CPU (Corsair H110i), and the Nvidia 1080, (Evga hybrid kit for reference 1080's), also in view is a Corsair Ram cooling fan,
a small PCIe Sata card, and a Intel 750 1.2TB ssd.

Question: Upcoming Intel optane will be using PCIe slots or SATA?

Re: New Video Card for the Rig
I found this on the Intel site infomercial
Intel Optane
Video for Xpoint
10x More Performance1 3D XPoint™ Technology delivers up to 10x more performance than NAND across a PCIe* NVMe* interface
Update re the Rig, Had to dump the H110, faulty pump, weird clicking noises and CPU temps all over the place, so went back to H80i, not as pretty, but I will try a RMA on the H110
