[FINAL UPDATE] SilentGamer64's Pokemon: Trident Version Thread
************NOTICE************
This is the first time I have publicly announced my game on the internet. Multi-regional Pokémon games are a huge controversial topic on many Pokémon forums, and so I'm trying to keep things fairly low key until I have more content completed. Please don't post or link this thread or information anywhere else without my permission. If you want to discuss my game, you can talk about it right here, or you can PM/email me about it.
I am not looking for any help with my game. This is something I want to do for myself. Any requests to help with this game will be (respectfully) ignored.
The Alpha build of the game is not out yet, so please don't ask for a link to download it. A link will be provided at the top of this post when it is released. I will release it when I feel like it is ready to be released, or, as the devs of Project Contingency say: SOON™
UPDATES:
FINAL UPDATE:
I apologize for not updating you guys on my progress, it’s been a busy semester and sometimes life gets in the way of things… which is what I want to talk about today.
I am sorry to announce that Pokémon Trident Version is being discontinued. Looking back at all that I had accomplished, as well as what I still had to do, I realized that this project was too ambitious to finish. Fitting four regions into one Pokémon game is no easy task, and I hope one day someone ends up successfully doing it, whether it be a game by Nintendo/Game Freak, or a fan project. I apologize again for having to discontinue this project, I know a lot of you guys were really looking forward to it. I guess the only thing left to do now is show you how far I got before putting a halt on development:
:) I’m totally messing with you guys. THE ALPHA FOR POKEMON TRIDENT VERSION IS COMPLETE!!!
So here’s how this is going to work. I have a (sloppy but functional) forumotion site set up called SG Studio. This is basically going to serve as a feedback forum so that you guys can report any bugs, glitches, and other oddities that may show up during the Alpha.
Here’s the link to SG Studio: http://sgstudio.forumotion.com/
You can also use the forum to post ideas or suggestions for improving the game. Be aware that I may not always use every single idea presented, either because it’s too complicated to implement, or if it clashes with the design direction I’m trying to take with this game… or maybe it’s just because I think it’s a really bad idea lol. Please be aware that I’m still keeping this game under a low profile since it still has a long way to go before being even halfway completed, so this is going to be treated like more of an exclusive Alpha test. I really don’t think there’s much else to say. If you want to download/play the game and see a summary of what’s in it so far, go ahead and click that link to SG Studio. Now that I have a somewhat dedicated site, I’m probably going to stop posting Trident-related stuff on here. This OP is getting way to friggin’ big.
Thank you so much for your continued support. Enjoy!
One more thing: I’m going to need a few moderators to help me run the forums. Obviously I can’t do it by myself or else it will take my time away from making the game. Since most of you guys are pretty active and fairly polite on the P:C forums, I might be able to trust you as mods (well, some of you anyways). If you’re interested, message me on SG Studio.
UPDATE:
This is a game I've been working on for the past... 6-8 months (I think?) I can't remember when I first started this project since it seems like it was so long ago. I also had to scrap everything and start over from scratch at one point since I redownloaded the engine when it was updated. It's been updated again since then, but I've decided to just stick with the version I have and copy any changes over from the newest version into my own game.
Introduction:
The game will feature all Pokémon and regions from Gen 1-4. I could have done whatever is past Gen 4, but seeing that I’ve never played any of the 3DS Pokémon games nor will I ever have the desire to, I’m just going to cut it off at Gen 4. Besides that, the Pokémon God seems like a fitting ending point for the Pokedex, as you really can’t top the creator of all Pokémon as far as catching ‘em all goes. Anyhow, moving on...

UPDATE:
- UPDATE:
My sincere apologies for going dark on you guys. I had a few unexpected events occur that required me to be in other places and away from my computer for the past two weeks. That being said, progress has been slow, but it's still progress.
I've decided that the working title of the game is going to be Pokémon: Trident Version, and unless I figure out something better to call it, that's what I'm going with. So now I'll give you a rundown of what I've done so far...
I believe I had all the maps up to New Bark Town completed when I first announced the game. At this point in time, all maps that will be featured in the Alpha build of the game have been completed, which includes (almost) everything up to Violet City. It may not seem like a lot considering the fact that there's still around 90% of Johto that isn't even completed yet, but I've kept busy with other things as well.
The next big thing that I've done is gathered and implemented all the music that will be available in the Alpha build of Trident. This includes day and night themes. That's right, every town and route will have a softer/slower night theme that will start ~8:00 PM. It was a feature inspired by Diamond/Pearl that I decided to implement. I also plan on adding light-up windows to give each town a little more ambience during the night hours, but that might not come until later.
The Regional PC system is up and running. As soon as you enter Johto, you'll be starting fresh, and all your Kanto Pokémon will be waiting for you after you clear the region. What isn't working unfortunately is item storage. Much like how I take the player's Pokémon away when they travel over to Johto, I have to take the player's items away as well, to avoid people from smuggling over a bunch of ultra balls, max potions, and other advantageous items that would make starting out in a new region way too easy. I figured out how to take all of the items away from the player, but instead of storing those items, they are permanently deleted instead. This is a huge issue, and I will try my best to fix it.
Last but not least, I've started implementing an outfit system that allows you to change into the "clothes" of different characters. I will include pictures of these two new outfits along with a few new screenshots below:
And for all you weirdo's who like playing Pokémon as girls:
Cherrygrove City
Violet City
So here's what's left on the bucket list before I release the Alpha:
- Audio/Music (I'm currently in the process of wrapping this up)
- Menu/UI graphical elements (Started addressing this a little bit, still lots to do)
- Map Bugs (I'll be combing my game for these in one final playthrough before releasing the Alpha)
- Move Bugs (I've got a fat list of all the known moves that are broken/useless. These will all be fixed before the Alpha is released, but it'll be up to you guys to report any other issues you may have with certain moves as you play through the game)
- Trans-regional item storage (this is probably the toughest issue I'm having so far. I'll let you know when I fix it)
- Title Screen
Other stuff that will come after the Alpha is released:
- Light-up windows for night aesthetics (might not release the Alpha with this, but we'll see)
- Move animations (They still look awful, but the Alpha is more of a gameplay test than a full release. That being said, don't have such high expectations because they're not very impressive/complete right now)
- Mapping the rest of Johto (everything beyond Violet City)
- Mapping Hoenn
- Mapping Sinnoh
- Mapping [REDACTED]
;)

Besides that, the Pokémon God seems like a fitting ending point for the Pokedex, as you really can’t top the creator of all Pokémon as far as catching ‘em all goes. Anyhow, moving on...
Graphic Style:
- Spoiler:
Generation 3. More specifically, Fire Red and Leaf Green graphics. I am aware that the internet constantly puts Gen 3 under fire, but then again, when does the internet not put stuff under fire?
There are a couple of reasons why I picked Gen 3 graphics over others, but to keep it short, I find Gen 3 graphics to be the easiest to manage (plus the engine came with almost everything from FR/LG), and they also give a bit of a throwback vibe to Gens 1 and 2 while still remaining fairly aesthetically pleasing. Gen 3’s graphics are also the most efficient to use, since Kanto, Hoenn, and even bits and pieces of Johto are already completely laid out for me to reference. This means that I basically only have to draw up 1.5 regions from scratch instead of having to re-map up to 4 entire regions when using other graphics.
Plot:
- Spoiler:
- Well, the plot of the game is basically going to mimic the plots of the first 4 generations of Pokémon games. In other words, you'll be fighting off Team Rocket in the Kanto and Johto regions, Team Aqua/Magma in Hoenn, and Team Galactic in Sionnoh (I cannot for the life of me spell out the name of the Diamond/Pearl region. My apologies for spelling errors). In each of the four regions, your end goal is to take on the Elite Four, become the Champion of that region, and then move on to the next region, rinse and repeat. Obviously filling out the Pokedex will be the ultimate end goal, but I've already planned an additional end-game area where you can put your battling skills to the test against the one true Pokémon Master of this game (who could it possibly be?).
New Features (both finished and planned):
- Spoiler:
- All 4 regions from Gens 1-4 will be accessible, including the Sevii Islands from Fire Red/Leaf Green, and a "secret" region that I have planned for the end-game.
- Actually allowing the player to be able to "catch 'em all" with no strings attached. In other words, all 493 Pokémon from Gens 1-4 will be obtainable in-game, without the need for trading or events.
- Multiple save files (I believe I made it three save files max).
- PokeGear system returning from Gen 2, redesigned and revamped.
- Banking system similar to the player's Mom from Gold/Silver, only without the frivolous spending, and it's in an actual bank. Includes ATM style online banking on the player's PC.
- While you technically start out as Red or Green (depending on your gender) from Gen 1, your character isn't really meant to be any specific character from any of the Pokémon games. I plan on including an outfit system that allows you to obtain and wear different outfits of iconic characters, including each of the four different male and female trainers that were playable characters throughout the first four generations of Pokémon games.
- A "Link Cable" item that will help you get the trade-evolution Pokémon in their final forms without actually having to trade between this game and that other nonexistent version that I don't plan on making. It basically works like an evolution stone, but only for Pokémon that are traded to evolve.
- A few new Pokémon moves that I made.
- More new features may come later on. (REASONABLE) Ideas and suggestions are welcome.
General Progress of the Game:
- Spoiler:
Basically, I'm finished with Kanto (by "finished", I'm talking about the whole story of R/B/Y, Routes, Trainers, Gyms, and Elite Four), and I added in the Sevii Islands from Fire Red/Leaf Green for additional places to explore. I plan on releasing the Alpha of my game after I map out all the towns and routes up to Johto's first gym. But, I still have to code in all of the events that lead up to the point where the player transitions from Kanto to Johto, which will probably take longer than the mapping itself. That being said, considering the fact that I decided to go with gen 3 graphics, the Alpha build of my game will basically look like a slightly modified Fire Red/Leaf Green reskin, which is actually a valid point of criticism. However, I promise that more is coming, and hopefully when the player transitions over to Johto they will see that.
Besides finishing stuff for the Alpha release and completing the game in general, things that I still have left to do include:
- Implementing audio throughout the game. The default music the engine provides is alright, but I'm adding in actual Pokémon music and sound effects from the Gen 3 games, as well as from a handful of artists on Youtube who have agreed to let me use their pieces in my game.
- Move animations. The default move animations the engine provides are god awful, and most of them aren't even there. That being said, I'm not complaining since I would rather have an engine with most of the gameplay mechanics complete than an engine with all the move animations complete. Since I'm going for a Gen 3 art style, the move animations will reflect that art style. However, I may not finish all the move animations before I release the Alpha, which is more of a gameplay test than a graphics showcase.
- Menu/UI Elements. These are in just as bad of a state as the move animations. It isn't so much that they look bad, as it is they're very inconsistent. For example, the "start" menu looks like it's straight out of Gen 3. But when you select the bag, the bag menu uses Gen 4 graphics. In addition, the overworld use Gen 3 graphics, but when you initiate a battle, the battle menu uses Gen 4 graphics. In other words, it's a mish mash of Gen 3 and Gen 4 graphics. The battle menu UI is something I promised myself I would fix before launching the Alpha, because players are going to spend more time in battle than they are in the overworld, so it should look consistent.
- Map Bugs. Sometimes, these can be as small as a simple tile error on a house or tree, or as large as blocking off an entire area that could prevent the player from completing the story. In either case, these are usually very easy fixes that could be resolved within a few minutes.
- Move Bugs. These are generally insignificant issues given the fact that there are plenty of other moves that do work, but it can really screw up the player's plans for giving their Pokémon a certain moveset. I will try to resolve these as soon as possible, but they're not always an easy fix and could take time. Until then, I will provide a list of all the buggy/broken moves at the bottom of this post. Also, for anyone who is wondering, all moves from Gens 1-4 will be present in the game. Nothing more (besides a few of my own custom made moves), nothing less.
A few things explained in more detail:
Transitioning Between Regions (General):
This is the most controversial part of most multi-gen proposals for Pokémon games. My system is a mix of ideas I’ve found on the internet combined with ideas of my own. So here’s the deal with Region switching:
- Spoiler:
When you beat the Elite Four for the second time in Kanto, Professor Oak will confront you outside of your house in Pallet Town and tell you to meet him in his lab. When you talk to him in the lab, he will ask you to do a favor for him that involves Professor Elm in New Bark Town. For each subsequent region you complete, the Professor of that region will always call you back to their lab for you to involve yourself with the Professor of the next region that they belong to. Elm for Johto, Birch for Hoenn, and Rowan for Sionoh. Believe it or not, there is a time difference between the events that take place in Red/Blue/Yellow (Kanto) and Gold/Silver/Crystal (Johto). However, I'm probably just going to retcon those few years and condense them into one seamless transition. That being said, changes will occur in Kanto after you get to Johto, since that is a part of G/S/C's storyline later on. If you accept Oak's request, you will be locked out of the Pokémon League to encourage you to move on. However, if you tell him you’ll do the task later, you can continue exploring and training in Kanto, which won’t really show any visible signs of change (ex. Koga will still be in Fuchsia City’s Gym, Viridian City’s Gym Leader will still be Giovanni, etc). When you go to Johto and come back to Kanto, the appropriate changes will be made to follow the settings of Gen 2’s Kanto. Because these are the only two regions that actually directly conflict with each other in terms of time and events, the Hoenn and Sionoh regions will be virtually untouched when they are revisited later in the game, save for whatever havoc you reap prior to then of course.
As far as transitioning between the other regions is concerned, the time line doesn't really limit what can and can’t be done when going from Johto to Hoenn, Hoenn to Sionoh, etc. Therefore, unlike the awkward time frame between Kanto and Johto, accepting the Professor’s request to travel to other regions will not limit you to traveling directly to that region, and you are free to explore all the previous regions you have already been to. Sionoh is the last region, so once you beat the Elite Four of Sionoh, you will gain access to all the main regions available in the game. Also realize that some events in certain regions may not become available until other regions are completed…
Transitioning between Regions (Changes to the Player):
- Spoiler:
Once Kanto is completed and the player arrives in Johto, Professor Elm will be in his lab with some other familiar faces. Elm will proceed to tell you that Oak wants the player to fill out the Pokedex for the Johto region. Because Oak will have already updated your Pokedex back in Kanto, Elm will instead give you his phone number, furthering the usefulness of your PokeGear which did virtually nothing for you in Kanto. The map is also updated (or, in the case of Kanto, downgraded, as you will eventually have to revisit all the towns in Kanto after completing Johto to experience the minor changes that have taken effect and to unlock the towns so you can fly to them again), and will now show both Kanto and Johto regions.
As cool as it is getting some new toys, Elm will also take away most of your old ones. This includes all items, key items (with a few exceptions, such as the Vs. Seeker mentioned earlier), and Pokeballs that you may have brought with you. Along with loosing most of your items, Bill will be there to take all of your Pokémon and store them in the Kanto PC system. Elm will explain that he wants you to start fresh on your journey through Johto, and will give you one of the three Johto starters shortly. Bill will then explain that since you are no longer in Kanto, you will not be able to use Bill’s PC to access your Pokémon that you caught in Kanto, including your party Pokémon that Bill just took from you. Instead, you will use a separate PC system for Johto. Bill will explain that he is trying to link Kanto and Johto's PC systems together, and until then, you will have to stick with whatever Pokémon you find in Johto.
This entire sequence was specifically designed with gameplay in mind. For example, if players were able to keep their Elite Four Hall of Fame Pokémon, they would easily be able to breeze through Johto without a problem. This also prevents players from using Pokémon with HM moves that they shouldn’t have in Johto until completing certain events. In terms of items, these are taken away to prevent players from stocking up on potions to constantly heal their new, weaker Johto starter and other subsequent Pokémon that are caught at low levels. Pokeballs are taken away to prevent players from smuggling over 99+ ultra balls or their potentially unused Master Ball to make catching Pokémon easier earlier on than it should be. Most Key Items are taken away, mainly to prevent clutter, since Johto will provide you with another entire bag-full of key items, but also to prevent the player from using TM’s and HM’s too early, since some TM’s can provide significantly powerful moves, and HM’s allow players to access areas that they shouldn’t be able to reach yet via Cut, Surf, Fly, etc. As said before, the player is allowed to keep certain key items, such as the Vs. Seeker mentioned above, as well as the town map, which will be absorbed into the PokeGear. Once this sequence is finished, Elm will then allow the player to take one Johto starter of their choosing. This is essentially how the beginning of each new region will go down, where the player will lose all their Pokémon and bag items, and will then be given a new starter Pokémon for that region.
Getting back these taken items is another matter that I’ve been thinking about. I’ve considered using the banking system where, in addition to handling money, the player would have a drop box for infinite item storage. When switching regions for the first time, all items would be taken by the Professor of that region and put into your drop box at the bank, only allowing you to access them again once you clear that region.
Another possibility is to just have the Professor take them all at the beginning of each new region, and then give them all back to you once you clear that region, but the banking idea sounds a lot more creative and convenient, because then I’ll also have an excuse to take away all of the player’s money (temporarily, of course), possibly through a “banking error” that leaves you with the bear minimum for each new region.

Re: [FINAL UPDATE] SilentGamer64's Pokemon: Trident Version Thread
Sound super sick man, I few things I'd like to suggest:
1) Rather than being forced a sprite upon you, why not just allow the player to choose a sprite? Whether that be your generic bug catcher, psychic trainer or even (my favourite) poke breeder?
2)It'd be nice if there was a late game item that if held by a pokemon in your team, would act as an infinite repel, only causing strong pokemon to appear.
3) Please no 'fairy' type / gen 6 balancing
4)Allow you to take in your own poke balls and the ability to use your own pokemon in the safar zone though, only allowed to use sleep, freeze and para inducing moves.
5)Similar to Emerald make NG+++ Elite Four harder (but way more this time) and grant Elite Four rewards.
6)Allow your starter pokemon to 'forget' HM moves rather than teacher being necessary to remove said HM
7)The ability to buy things like quick claw, power orb, flame orb, etc for large sums of money rather than minigame points (<.< Looking at you battle circuit)
8) FInally, for the love of god, if you add battle frontier, please take out the bullshit pyramid and replace it with a custom made one because fuk that shit.

What engine are you using exactly? Quickly scanning the thread didn't seem to give a name.

Re: [FINAL UPDATE] SilentGamer64's Pokemon: Trident Version Thread
I believe it's a custom engine built from scratch.
Quick question: can we have pokemon follow us around like in gen 2? Cuz that was pretty awesome IMO, although I can understand not wanting to sprite 8 more overworld sprites for hundreds of pokemon.

Probably a pokemon firered ROM hack.
I'd say if you were to make it in Unity or UE4 you'd have much more freedom.

Re: [FINAL UPDATE] SilentGamer64's Pokemon: Trident Version Thread
Ok, I'll answer these one at a time.
2. Excellent idea. There's really no point in forcing players to keep burning money at the end of the game for repels. Consider it considered.
3. Gen 1-4 regions only. Therefore, Gen 1-4 Pokemon only. All Pokemon, types, and moves up to Diamond/Pearl will be available, but nothing beyond that. So no, no Fairy types.
4. Your Safari Zone idea sounds like a good end game option, but each of the generations had their own (similar) systems for the Safari Zone. Gen 1 had the basic rock/bait system, Gen 2 had it in the form of the Bug Catching contest (where you actually do get to use your own Pokemon), Gen 3's was like Gen 1's but with placable bait that could be left to attract Pokemon so you could find them when you come back later, and (I think) Gen 4 added different zones that were only accessible by a train that ran through the middle. So yeah, I'll think about it for the end-game, but I'm probably going to keep the Safari Zones the way they were in each Generation during the main story/adventure.
5. Not sure what you mean by NG++, but if you're talking about a more difficult Elite Four challenge the second time around, I'm already planning on that for each region. In Kanto (R/B/Y region), if you catch at least 60 Pokemon and talk to Oak, he'll give you the Johto Dex, and then when you face the Elite Four next time, not only will their original Pokemon be higher leveled/stronger, but they'll also have Pokemon from Johto (G/S/C) on their team.
6. Only starter Pokemon? Hm... Not sure about this one, because you should be able to find an "HM slave" to teach all your unwanted HM's to. For example, you could teach Poliwag Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool, and Dive. There's all your water HM's on one Pokemon. Other Pokemon like Rattata and Sentret can learn most of the other HM's besides Fly, which is a good move on its own anyways. In addition to the Move Delter, there will also be Move Maniacs in each of the four regions, so if you had to delete a good move for an HM, or you missed a good move because you couldn't delete an HM, you can reteach that move to your Pokemon for a Heart Scale/Mushroom/whatever the guy wants.
7. I know for a fact you can find the Quick Claw in my game. I think I put it in the Kanto Safari Zone, so you'll be able to get it fairly early in-game. But yeah, a strategic item store would probably be something I would make available at the halfway point.
8. I hear ya. The only Battle Frontier Brain I ever beat was Lucy (that f*cking Shuckle though...). I came close to finding the Pyramid Brain, but then my last Pokemon was randomly poisoned and I couldn't make it to him. If I do include the Battle Frontier, it will probably be in the Hoenn region like it was in Emerald, but I'm going to finish all 4 regions before I even start working on that.
1. I could do that later on, but you have to realize how much work that would be for me. While I already have a bunch of front sprites I could use, I also have to create back sprites to match those front sprites when you go into battle. This includes animations for throwing out your Pokemon into battle. (Example)Neesy wrote:Sound super sick man, I few things I'd like to suggest:
-snip-

General_101 wrote:What engine are you using exactly? Quickly scanning the thread didn't seem to give a name.
It's called RPG Maker XP. I got it on sale on Steam for ~$20. There's a downloadable add-on for it called Pokémon Essentials. It basically comes with it's own engine that includes the entire tileset of Gen 3 graphics and a bunch of Gen 4 stuff. It also came with Gen 5 Pokemon and other stuff, but those wont be featured in the game since I'm cutting everything off at Gen 4.
It's basically a starter kit for making Pokemon games, but while Essentials already does a lot of work for me, there's even more stuff that I have to edit on my own to finish my game. For example, the banking system wasn't in the engine, I had to code that in manually. I also changed all of the Pokémon sprites to match the rest of Gen 3's graphics (they were Gen 4 sprites by default).

Quick question: can we have pokemon follow us around like in gen 2? Cuz that was pretty awesome IMO, although I can understand not wanting to sprite 8 more overworld sprites for hundreds of pokemon.
I wish I could brag and say I made it from scratch, but then I wouldn't be nearly as close to releasing an Alpha as I am now.
It was indeed awesome, but unfortunately I have no plans to feature it in this game. And your assumption on why I wouldn't want to do that is correct. There are 493 Pokemon planned to be in my game, all with different sizes in the overworld. I could rip them from Heartgold/Soulsilver, but then it isn't really staying true to Gen 3 graphics. There will be a few overworld Pokemon sprites like Pikachu, Psyduck, and all the Legendaries, but every single Pokemon is a lot of work.

I'd say if you were to make it in Unity or UE4 you'd have much more freedom.
Eh, this engine I'm using gives me almost all of the freedom I need for a Pokemon game. The greatest barrier will be coding in all the new features in myself.

When I was referring to NG+++ in Pokemon Emerald there were atleast 3 variants of the Elite four, the hardest being when they had mid level 70 pokemon. I'm proposing the final Elite four NG+++ to have around 80 - mid 90 Lvl pokemon as-well-as being less scripted e.g, the first move their pokemon does on the first round being scripted.

I could make three variants for each Elite Four. I will say that ***spoilers*** I plan on having only one final trainer with a full team of Pokemon at level 100. But if you've progressed through the game long enough, yeah, it would make sense that the Elite Four are leveled around 80-90 when you go back to fight them again.
There's nothing scripted about any of the AI battles in the game. In fact, I think by default the AI's choose moves to use at random. I might be able to go in and make the Elite Four AI smarter by using supereffective moves on certain pokemon types, and avoiding not very effective moves on others, but there should be a 1/4 chance that they'll start off with a different move every time.

Sounds good my man.

Why not multiple if I may ask? One for each Region?
Steven, Prof.Oak, Red, etc are all available to you.

Why not a final pokemon league like battle against both the Boy and Girl characters from every region, the thing is, you would face off against their rival(s) in battle first in a single or double battle, then the actual main characters. So I would combat Blue, then Red and Green (or Leaf if you prefer that name), Then I would combat Silver, then Ethan and Lyra, Next would be Wally, then Brendan and May. And finally, there would be Berry, then Lucas and Dawn. Until you face your final foe...Your Rival!!

RPGMaker, huh? I really hope you differentiate yourself from other games using that engine. Most games I have seen using that engine are all the same from their quirks, how they play, and even how their menus look and work. I hope you have something down to separate yourself from the rubbish. Other than that good luck in your endeavors.

I think the thing that I'm most concerned about is people only playing through half the game and then putting it down because they think it's just a copy of Fire Red/Leaf Green. To be fair, just because I use FR/LG graphics doesn't mean it's an exact copy of FR/LG, because it's going to be much more than that. The only problem is that, when making a game that spans 4 generations of regions, each region is going to feel very familiar and similar to the official regions in the Nintendo games that you played. That's why I'm planning on adding in a bunch of new features as well as a new, small end-game region with it's own little story to show off my own creative flare instead of just releasing the game with all of the same maps that Game Freak did years ago.
I understand that people are going to expect graphics and menus to be unique from other RPGMaker projects, and I will try to stay as true to my own style as possible, but what I want people to take away from this game is how the game, overall, is unique from other games. No other Pokemon game I know of has 4+ full-fledged regions to explore. Not one. This is a huge undertaking, and I want people to realize that I'm starting and finishing each region out of nothing but map references from the official games.

I saw someone make the argument that if you consider video games art, all fan games are basically fanart, which is legal. However, if that fanart was sold for profit, it would be illegal. That's why my game will be free, to try and avoid those issues.
The other potential concern is with the content, which uses Nintendo's assets. Most if not all of those assets (audio, sprites, art, concepts, ideas, etc) all belong to Nintendo, I claim none of it to be my own. The only thing I can legally claim to be my own include any sprites I created from scratch, and possibly the reorganization of Nintendo's assets, but I may not even bother claiming that as my own, because most of that organization is still based off of the official Pokémon games.
If a C&D happens, it happens. It would suck for me not being able to continue the project, and it would suck even more for all the people out there who were anticipating the game's completion, but I don't really have much reason to be concerned unless it actually happens. Until it does, I'll continue working on the game as long as I can.
