Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Maps and game modes are really important to pretty much any multiplayer game that exists. Halo's longevity has been made possible by both of these working together, as well as with the sandbox. Here's some guidelines as to how to make suggestions which you can make by replying below!
For Map Suggestions
Map Name: [What do you want to name your map? This is completely optional]
Top-Down:* [Please give a top down image of the map as a spoiler. Include symbols and a legend to make it easy to read and understand what you are trying to convey]
Extra Images: [Any other images you wish to add for your map. If you have specific areas on the map that you wish to expand upon with images, be sure to notify where the pieces belong!]
Notes: [Anything else you wish to include with your map]
Please note, we can only accept unique map suggestions rather than remakes of existing maps.
For Game-Mode Suggestions
Mode Name: [What do you wish to call your game-mode?]
Modification:* [Is this a variant of an existing game-mode? If so, please tell which. If not, write N/A]
Rules:* [Describe your game-mode as best you can!]
Team Play:* [Does this gametype support teams? Can there be versions with(out) teams?]
Win Conditions:* [What does somebody need to do to win?]
Extra: [Anything else you wish to include with your gametype]
*required
When creating maps, be aware of map flow, as you cannot have combat stagnate in one area, or have too many paths around. Sightlines are also something to be cautious about, as that can have some seriously unintended side effects
When creating a gamemode, be wary that every player should have an equal chance at victory. Don't make a gamemode that would be extremely unfair to any one player or team, because nobody will like your suggestion and it'll be a losing situation for everyone :(

Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Suggestion for a map : A sphere that is large enough for players to notice it is a sphere, but not too small for it to become a hassle with Close-Mid Range weapons. This sphere will act like those mini planets from Super Mario Galaxy. Forerunner in origin, you cannot see all the way across the map, but in about a minute and a half; you can run full circle on it's surface if uninterrupted. Could be an interesting map considering gravity isn't really "down", but at the center of the sphere. Thus, grenade arcs would be skewed, and rockets wouldn't fly straight, but if you looked dead ahead and fired one; it would stay at the same altitude flying in orbit around the sphere, until it explodes of course, or leaves orbit. Flying vehicles would be a little disorienting since you are essentially flying in orbit around a tiny planet. Plenty of cover to use. Radial and split symmetry apply to this map. Ground level possibly translucent to allow you peek at a cool light effect explaining the weird gravity and spot where enemy players are on the other side of the ground level. Just be sure to be aware of your surroundings. Looking down to recon the other side may result in a surprise attack from fellow players.
~~~~Deadofmind's two cents add value
Add some tunnels to go inside the planet to allow sub-terrain transport and to slightly obscure the view while players look down to recon the other side of the planet. Blindspots will require players to hunt down the best areas to get the least amount of blind spots.
That.. Is a super rad idea right there. I especially like the transparency part. Maybe even add some tunnels going through it?
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
There's also a map shaped like the world in AoS/BnS but I'm too lazy to upload my own screenshots and I can't find any on the web (I looked for like 2 minutes)
The world makes a fantastic map purely because everyone already knows the callouts. It's a lot easier to take Asia if someone lets you know that there's a bunch of snipers in India so you should go through Russia because there's a large mountain range between those two places (at least in the map idk irl).
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
You can also look at other games for inspiration. The image below is the Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 skirmish 1v1 map: Industrial Strength.
(Sorry I couldn't put it in a spoiler, it won't add spoilers from my phone. Will edit into spoiler later)
A small island with box-like canyons surrounding each player's base, and a central butte with a building that can be captured to give your army an advantage. Plenty of buildings along the coast to garrison, bolstering your defensive capabilities, and also offering other upgrades to your army. The larger of the canyon walls that surround your starting point has a ramp to allow players to deploy troops up high to attack any structures close to the walls.
BTW: Any maps I sugguest for Contingency will be featured in Project: Drop. This way, you can enjoy the maps in both Contingency playstyle and Drop playstyle, allowing you to enjoy the map in different ways.
- Conversion of the Map from CNC to Halo:
- With a few tweaks, Industrial Strength can be converted for FPS play.
[list]
- Make the island smaller, so you don't have to run or drive around for over a minute uninterrupted to reach the enemy base
- alter the coastal buildings to make them more UNSC in appearance
- have the bases be forerunner themed and either set into the canyon walls closest to the North-Eastern and South-Western coasts or in the center's of the box canyons
- alter the design of the central garage in the center and make it the Neutral Base. As a prize, there should be a Tank for the two teams to fight over for battlefield dominance. I think the Grizzly from Halo Wars should be the award for capturing the neutral base.
- add an archway or a bridge over the breaks in the walls to allow players who climb onto the canyon walls to maneuver anywhere on them without the need of a jetpack
- add cave systems in the larger sections of the walls so CQC players can have some fun and alternate routes to the enemy base to use for flanking
- a cave system underneath the butte in the center to allow foot traffic without too much fear of vehicles driving on the roads and mowing you down + CQC balancing aspect of tight quarters
- some buildings should probably be damaged, adding cover and road obstacles in some areas as well as some access into said buildings
- some small structures on top of the canyon walls to provide cover for top dwellers and holes to drop down in cave systems within canyon walls
- the tops of the canyon walls should feature a landing pad at south-eastern and north-western canyon walls on the map. The landing pad with obviously have a flying vehicle.
Ladies and Gents, i present to you: Outpost 17.
"The UNSC set up outposts all across the Forerunner Shieldworld Onyx. Number 17 went dark and all the Spartans deployed there painted themselves Red and Blue. The fighting still continues on that little island."
- Top-Down view of CnC:
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Another suggestion is that for a Forge Map, if that game-mode becomes available in Contingency, is use the Firebase from Halo Wars. Simply have players roam around a basic Firebase built for gathering supplies. The three locations a player would be able to construct a structure in Halo Wars will have the Heavy Supply Pads. Players can construct their map on the flat surfaces atop the Heavy Supply Pads, around the Firebase itself, or within the Firebase's main room. It could even be a map similar to Sandbox and Erosion, allowing you to use the inside of the Firebase as a Grif-Ball court with the base on Lockdown Mode (See left image for Lockdown Mode.)
Forge Map Name : The Anvil
"Spartans come here not only to train, but to create. Using the Forge Program, they create arenas and sometimes works of art on this familiar landscape: a UNSC Firebase."
However, there is also use for this as a regular map for PvP only. Simply have the Spartans fight in a CQB arena within the Firebase in the command center. You can move from the Main Ops Center, to the Observation Deck, small hallways, a busted elevator. If you look out the windows in the Ops Center, you will find a battle waging outside. Enter the Observation deck area and look up to see a Dogfight between the Covenant and UNSC. Look down to see the inside of the Firebase, plenty of vehicles being repaired and deployed to the battle outside.
Standard Map Name : Command HUB
"While a battle wages outside, a civil war between the Spartans is fought in the very command center of this base. We may not win this battle, may god let us not lose the war."
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Would suggest you try to make custom maps rather than forge maps here. Forge isn't confirmed, and trying to suggest things based on unconfirmed thoughts is a waste of time for everyone involved. Also while your idea of the globe type map is fun sounding, I doubt you could seriously play a match of halo on it.
Just don't place any sniper rifles on the map. As for DMRs and BRs, it is pretty easy to get a headshot if the first thing you see is a head on the horizon. Much like getting a headshot over the edge of a hill.
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Thats not the point I'm making, Dreux. The type of game we're creating isn't one that pulls stupid/funny gags in map designs for the sake of gimmicks or quirks. That acts with double effects if the gameplay on a singular map is construed to be completely unique to the rest of the gameplay that exists in the game. Sure it stands out, but it stands out because it's out of place and doesn't belong as opposed to standing out for being cool and different.
You can make the same argument for specific animated objects causing player deaths or low gravity zones for alternate combat, however in the case of a halo game, both of those two apply to the latter of the two points rather than the former. They can fit the general aesthetic of a map, fall into the not-quite-spoken lore of a map, or simply feel right because of the situational placement of these items. Take that into consideration as you make your suggestions, as it'll be far more beneficial to you.
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
This is basically inspired by Mario Kart Double Dash, but I always wanted to see a gametype where teams of 2 would race each other on mongooses while running into custom powerups that gave the passenger a random weapon/grenade. It's basically like a mix of the race and fiesta gametypes. Maybe to balance it each powerup only gives players 1 clip worth of ammo (32 AR rounds, 2 rockets, 1 splazer shot, etc). Maybe it's already been done and I just didn't know about it. Given Halo 5's forge capabilities it wouldn't surprise me, but it's just a thought.
BTW I've been away for a while honing my coding skills. I've been using Unity for a class and I also just downloaded UE4 and tried playing around with it a little bit today. When I get more acquainted with the engine I might send in an application. Obviously I've always been interested in Contingency and I would definitely like to help out however I can, not to mention something like this would look good on a resume.
Re: Dedicated Suggestions Thread: Maps and Gamemodes
Map Name : Malta (Or Athens)
In the Halo 2 Missions The Armory and Cairo Station, players traversed through mostly intact atrium sections of Cairo Station. Why not mess it up a little, possibly blow a hole in a wall, and have players try to fight their way from a Pelican Hangar Bay to the Balcony tops (Where the mounted machine guns were placed in the mission), and vice versa? In my opinion, it would be cool to have a depressurized map. Sure the artificial gravity is still on, but all gunshots and blasts are now muffled. Keep a close eye on your radar. You can't hear the enemy stomping behind you.
"Map Description"
"When the Covenant found Earth, they destoryed two MAC Stations with ease. This is footage found from several trooper's moments before the blast that turned (INSERT EITHER ATHENS OR MALTA HERE) into dust. It has been described as silent chaos."
