Making a 2d halo game, need help from experienced coders :[ ?
Hi ya fellow forum members, so as the title says I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience with game maker because I'm making a 2d side scrolling halo game (basically halo: owaw remade) and I'm in need of coding tuts or examples ect! while I am a pretty good artist I'm not the best when it comes to coding... the best I could achieve with coding was a replica 2d version of mine craft xD anyway if anyone here has links to coding tuts for c++ in gm8 ( I think thats the language gm8 uses) I would really like to check them out. If anyone wants to help with stuff like graphics ( for UI ) or level design I'm open to suggestions

I think game maker uses game maker language or something like that. It's more closely related to flash than c++ (or maybe gm8 also does both flash and gml) but regardless you can't use C++ with game maker.
A couple years ago, I actually tried to do the same thing (although I didn't have owaw's sprites) and I got pretty far, when I quit, it was because the engine couldn't handle my 1337 game without lagging really, really badly to the point where enemies would move and leave their head one step behind them. It is also worth mentioning that when I did that I wasn't using game maker (I don't pay for development tools), I was using scratch.

Cool, I wish I had the devotion to become code swavy.
Do you have any unique features in mind? what are you going to do regarding designing the mechanics? Are you going to put the effort into implementing multiplayer?
Don't forget to add us as obscure references scattered throughout the levels... maybe Mr secretman in a high up are who hands you the only rocket launcher on the map, he's already pixelated.

Tomorrow I have an english exam that I have to write so I'm practicing for that atm :I so I guess on saturday (in two days for me) we could work something out? what would you like to help with though, like story or level design or something :) its actually pretty simple stuff in terms of designing 2d platformers, but id also like you to get creative if you wanted to help in that area. Things like hold out zones and possibly small firefights and what not, maybe even find this and then go put this there type objectives ( like in the library on halo ce ).
Anyhow if anyone else wants to help just ask :)
Also I though GM8 had like separate packages that you loaded in, that gave you more coding freedom and allowed for a more open less laagggy game, but eh I'm not too sure...

I'd do level design surely. I love making and playing 2d games (although I'm not the greatest one man programming team) and some more thoughtful level design could be fun.

My goal is to make like a 2d multiplayer firefight and custom game style halo game, no pvp cause that doesn't work the same in 2d xD just pve in teams :)
I guess il need creative level design pretty soon! as soon as I'm done with all the menu stuff and finished the character movement. Il need one for a development room :) i have some sprites designed particularly for this room, so il leave them here for your personal use if u ever want to flesh out some kind of rough draft

Oh man, those are awesome!
If you are using owaw's sprites, I can get started as soon as I get a chance. Is it okay if I compile all the tiles externally into a png? (because gm usually wants you to build levels in itself)

Sry man, I'm really busy. Got an english exam in about 2 hours or so... trying to memorise quotes and techniques and shit xD
Its really simple to re-organise them so its not that much of a problem.

Sry for the double post but i forgot to reply to this, and yeah you can do that! but right now i need to focus on making a development room to test out all the physics and AI movement and weapons ( il start coding the character this alvo since I'm at school now ) and a placeholder menu screen xD and after that we can make 2 campaign levels and a few firefight missions and try to incorporate some sort of online system using external stuff which you can add to GMLJaing wrote:I can come up with some storylines, depending on what you want. Alright guys I've just finished all my exams, gosh that was a while! I'm not too sure though if i should go ahead with it :L lost a bit of motivation. Its good to see that everyone is still active though :)
If anyone has any menu design ideas id be happy to hear them! since I'm torn between making a reach style menu or a halo 2/3 style menu :'(

I dabble a little in Gamemaker. What are you trying to program? I might be able to help a little.

Probably depends on whether game maker can provide visual filters. Halo 3's menu background had that washed-out look and played idle animations and stuff, but reach just had a different picture for every menu. I kinda like H3's more but I wouldn't hold it against anyone for using reach's menu style instead.

Hmmm, moving does look better ay! keep in mind though that it will be a 2d side scroller game. Moving can still work though i might create a fully functional menu by the end of next week and then il upload a video of it and you guys can tell me what you think :)

In fact, you could just do the firefight demo background from OWaW. I have the sprites, if for some reason you don't.

I don't think it would be a good idea to just re-create the old background...
Partially cause I feel like I'm stealing if would go ahead and do that.
So I've decided I will go for a halo 2/reach background hybrid, I loved the login screen and accounts setup of halo 2 as well as the settings menu and I really liked the moving background as well! However I enjoyed the menu button layouts of reach ( such as the custom game/matchmaking and campaign menus )
so I'm going to do a kind of hybrid of the two if i get around to making it lol
Im also directing a machinima atm ;-; so much to do
